Midwest Executive Aviation and Newquay Cornwall Airport – Upbeat at Europe’s biggest business aviation gathering

Participating at EBACE in Geneva this week (Stand No.391) Newquay Cornwall Airport and its fixed based operator (FBO) Midwest Executive Aviation are reporting a continued increase in business aviation at the airport, despite current European market conditions.

Midwest Executive Aviation reports a 10% increase in handled traffic in the first quarter of 2009, despite business aviation movements in Europe currently 25% down against that same period in 2008. Furthermore, the company is expanding its FBO facilities in 2009, in line with the major developments underway at Newquay Airport, with a new, dedicated FBO building within the airport’s Controlled Zone, on schedule to open in October this year.

Nick Weston, Managing Director of Midwest Executive Aviation, is quietly optimistic and believes there are a number of reasons why Newquay Cornwall Airport is bucking the trend: “In January, Newquay, like other airports, FBO providers and operators, faced the prospect of a very difficult 2009 with the ongoing economic climate affecting business aviation. The first quarter of the year is traditionally the quietest period, but looking at our general traffic picture we see individuals and companies coming to the Cornwall area for economic cost savings.”

“Companies and individuals who charter business jets or have their own aircraft still want to travel in them, but they want to trim their costs. For a UK-based business, why take a group of clients or employees to France or Spain for an incentive trip or product launch at great expense, when you can have the same impact and experience with a short flight to the Cornish region? We have everything here that you need - world famous restaurants and chefs, golf links luxury hotels, quality beaches, watersports, and all only an hour from London.”

Newquay Cornwall Airport is the gateway to much of the South West of England. An hour’s flight from the major urban centres in the UK – London, Manchester, Edinburgh, etc, it offers something for everyone. Cornwall, the renowned surf capital of England, boasts a stunning coastline, fine beaches, plentiful golf courses, historic sea ports and award winning cuisine, thanks largely to celebrity chefs Rick Stein and Jamie Oliver’s sizeable investment in the region.

Because of the airport’s westerly and coastal position and its long runway it is increasingly popular as a technical stop for transatlantic flights.

“We are pleased at how business aviation is developing here, complementing our growth in scheduled traffic and the number of routes offered from Newquay (22 this summer) and will continue to work closely with Midwest Executive to further realise opportunities,” said Karen Medweth, Head of Commercial Development.

Midwest Executive Aviation opened its executive/business aviation facility at Newquay in 2003, complementing the company’s other UK FBO location at Durham Tees Valley Airport in the North East Of England.

Newquay Cornwall Airport’s large runway can accommodate a range of jets from the Cessna Citation Mustang and Embraer Phenom series entry level jets to heavier jets such as the Airbus ACJ/A319, Boeing BBJ, Embraer Legacy and Bombardier Challenger Series
